Since the ADA (American Dental Association) does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a specialty, it is hard for patients to know how much experience or expertise a dentist has in the arena of cosmetic dentistry. One very important thing to consider is their level of affiliation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), a worldwide organization dedicated to the education and advancement of cosmetic dentistry.
Accreditation with the AACD makes a strong statement, since only about 350 dentists worldwide have achieved this status. Dr. John is the only dentist in the northeast Arkansas area to have achieved the Accreditation Credential, and he also serves on the review board as an examiner for other dentists seeking to become accredited. Dr. John was also elected to the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry by his Accredited peers – which reflects the confidence that other Accredited Cosmetic Dentists around the world have in his experience, skill set, natural talent, and knowledge about cosmetic dentistry.
Why is accreditation with the AACD such a big deal? An Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has to complete an extremely vigorous and comprehensive process to be awarded the Accreditation Credential. The three step process begins with a written exam that tests the clinicians knowledge base of cosmetic dentistry. Then the dentist must present a number of specific, yet different types of cosmetic dentistry cases to a panel of experts and be found to demonstrate a high level of clinical excellence in cosmetic dentistry, and finally the dentist must pass a rigorous oral exam to ensure excellence in their diagnostic skills, treatment planning, and thoughtfulness toward any type of cosmetic case that they might be asked to treat. In addition to this credentialing process, all AACD Accredited Cosmetic Dentists are expected to adhere to a strict code of cosmetic dentistry ethics. No other certifying board requires their dentist to meets standards as tough as these.
